Description
Biogeography, by definition, encompasses the geographical distribution of animals and plants on the spatial and temporal scales by incorporation of data from a wide array of disciplines. This very interdisciplinary nature of the branch expands its ambits to the fields like environment, ecology, anthropology, physiography and so on. The Eastern Himalayas and its foothills sanctuarize diverse life forms embedded in its acclivitous landscape, shaping the environment, ethnicity and economy of the region. The myriad diversity of the region has been luring researchers and enthusiasts into manifold analyses and interpretations. The book Trends in Biogeography tries to encapsulate the work of authors from the disciplines of biology and geography capturing the essence of the biogeography of the Eastern Himalayas and adjoining regions. Original research and review articles have been divided into four sections namely Biodiversity, Ethnicity and Populations, Agro-diversity and Environment and land use patterns. Diverse topics related to floral and faunal diversity, agriculture, medicinal plants and ethnomedicine, wildlife conservation, population dynamics, land use land cover in the context of the North Bengal region have been compiled in the articles. A holistic approach has been adopted so that the readers are acquainted with the current trends of research, interest and concern related to the biogeography of the Eastern Himalayas and adjoining areas.
