The book, The Last Journey, is the grand finale of Mahabharata trilogy by scholar-author M.L. Varadpande, the first two being evocative works titled ‘Mahabharata in Performance’ and ‘Epic Hinduism.’ The present book reinvents stories and characters of the grand epic by Maharshi Vyasa with his erudite and innovative analysis and interpretation. Epic Dharma is most significant narration of the book which speaks of liberal tenets and culture of Dharma teachings of the epic. Mahabharata understands that Dharma can not be fossilized, inflexible, rigid in its import but is governed by Desha-Kala-Paristhiti, place, time and circumstances. As it is product of intellect, Buddhi, the Buddhi, that is intelligent interpretation of Dharma injunctions, is supreme. The epic became popular through its narration and visual interpretation through dance, drama and music for centuries. The book traces the performative tradition of the epic. The book is an enlightened critique of the grand epic, the largest known literary scripture of the world and is treated by the author as a source of contemporary popular religion.
