The book examines certain significant aspects of the linguistic and extra-linguistic relations of various strategies of politeness in the context of Vikram Chandra’s Sacred Games. Certain lexical, grammatical and pragmatic facts concerning the use of Indian English worthy of cognizance and understanding have been narrated. Various speech acts such as greeting, addressing, inviting, requesting, apologizing, complimenting, negotiating, blessing, endorsing, abusing, cursing, etc. have been explained. Positive Politeness Strategies, Negative Politeness Strategies and Other Politeness Strategies have been explained. The politeness principle can be reduced to minimization of disagreement, discord, self-praise, interference, imposition, and maximization of cordiality, and praise of the addressee. The literary discourse is continuous with the nonliterary discourse.
