Description
Excavations are an important part of the study of Heritage leading to the important outcomes of awareness, research and conservation. The excavations at Mandhal undertaken during 1975-77, in this regard, may be considered as the most unique and rewarding archaeological event in the history of Vidarbh. Mandhal, situated near the tributary Aam, which drains into Wainganga in Ambhora, is at a distance of 16.3 kms from the Umred Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary in Eastern Vidarbha. Nestling in idyllic surroundings with the gift of every aspect of nature’s bounty and suitable for the propagation of human culture, its history may be traced back to the second millennium BC, if not earlier. This account of Mandhal Excavations spans over a period from about 300 BCE till the Yādava and Bhosla periods. Undertaken under the Direction of Late Professor Ajay Mitra Shastri, the team of this excavation comprised of a group of luminaries, known for their contribution to Indological studies. The remarkable results of their endeavours included in this book make it a worthy contribution in the sphere academics even after a gulf of more than forty years. Just as in every part of the Globe, the present scenario of rapid growth and human expansion in Mandhal has made its History and Heritage a mute and weak prey to the inevitable act of trampling over the past towards future. For this reason, bringing out this book may be taken as a small, yet significant effort by the editors to put on record the Archaeological potential of Mandhal and its environs.
