Shri Madhusudan Narhar Deshpande, a distinguished archaeologist, art historian and conservator, retired from service, as Director General of Archaeology in India on 30th November, 1978 after a spotless and distinguished career. He has been known for his kindness to people, and has been rightly known in the Survey as 'Ajatasatru' and 'Dharmaraj. Shri Deshpandey who was trained by Sir Mortimer Wheeler, has himself contributed to the field of Archaeology a band of devoted archaeologists’ was one of those fortunate student who was taught how to wield the spade Shri Deshpandey. It was therefore, in the fitness of Indian Tradition that a Committee headed by Shri Deshpande’s close associate, Shri B.K.Thapar, decided to felicitate this scholar and humanist by presenting a volume containing scholarly articles on subjects very dear to Shri Deshpande. The volume has been fifty seven contributions on Prehistoty, Historical Archaeology, Architecture, Sculptural Art, Numismatics and Conservation by eminent scholar in the field.
