About the Book
The present book gives a historical outline of Indo-Buddhist art to sketch its various schools and to trace their mutual relationship. Apart from an Introduction giving a brief background, the entire period of nearly fifteen hundred years of Buddhist art from the third century BC to the twelfth century AD, has been covered in seven chapters devoted to India, treating of the monuments of Ashoka and the National School of Sculpture of Central India, Gandhara, Mathura, Amravati, the Golden Age of the Guptas, the cave temples. There follow a chapter on Ceylon and Java, where Buddhist art perhaps attained its highest standard in the great Borobodur. The book contains a very representative selection of photographs on the subject included in thirty-nine plates apart from a ground-plan of Borobodur, the great monument of the Mahayana, with its harmonious blending of Indian and local elements and wonderful display of sculptural decoration.
